Ed Matheny's book, "The Rise and Fall of
Excellence"
on the history of Southwest High School is a must read for all
Southwest Alumni!
No matter when you attended Southwest High School, this book has
something that will make you fondly remember your days at our alma
mater. The book is rich with information on the history of the school,
complete with pictures from all ages. From the beginnings of the
school, through its glory days, right up to the day the Kansas City
School district closed its hallowed doors.
This second edition also has information on the start of a new
tradition in our old building,
Southwest
Charter School.
Edward
T. Matheny, Jr., class of '40 was a history major in college, a cum
laude graduate of Harvard Law School, and a managing partner of
Blackwell Sanders, Matheny, Weary & Lombardi. He served as a
president of St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City and chairman of its
Foundation, chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri, and
first president of Kansas City's public television station, KCPT 19.
He is currently of counsel with Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin, Inc.
and a director of H & R Block Foundation, Dunn Industries, Inc.,
Tnemec Company, Inc., the Jacob and Ella Loose Trusts, and the Eye
Foundation of Kansas City.
